Disaster from the North
5 Declare in Judah, and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say,
“Blow the Trumpet through the land;
cry aloud and say,
‘Assemble, and let us go
into the fortified cities!’
6 Raise a standard toward Zion,
flee for safety, stay not,
for I bring Disaster from the north,
and great destruction.
7 A lion has gone up from his thicket,
a destroyer of nations has set out;
he has gone out from his place
to make your land a waste;
your cities will be ruins
without inhabitant.
8 For this put on sackcloth,
lament and Wail,
for the fierce anger of the Lord
has not turned back from us.”
|
9 “In that day, declares the Lord, courage shall fail both king and officials. The priests shall be appalled and the prophets astounded.”
10 Then I said,
“Ah, Lord God, surely you have utterly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying,
‘It shall be well with you,’
whereas the sword has reached their very life.”
11 At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, “A hot wind from the bare heights in the desert toward the Daughters of My People, not to winnow or cleanse,
|
12 a Wind too full for this comes for me. Now it is I who Speak in Judgment upon them.”
|
Behold, he comes up like clouds;
his chariots like the whirlwind;
his horses are swifter than eagles--
woe to us, for we are ruined!
|
14 O Jerusalem, wash your heart from evil,
that you may be saved.
How long shall your Wicked thoughts
Lodge within you?
15 For a voice declares from Dan
and proclaims trouble from Mount-Ephraim.
|
16 Warn the nations that he is coming;
announce to Jerusalem,
“Besiegers come from a distant land;
they shout against the cities of Judah.
17 Like keepers of a field are they against her all around,
because she has rebelled against me,
declares the Lord.
18 Your ways and your deeds
have brought this upon you.
This is your doom, and it is bitter;

David Hears of Saul's Death
1 After the death of Saul, when David had returned from striking down the Amalekites,
David remained two days in Ziklag.
|
2 And on the third day, behold, a man came from Saul's camp, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. And when he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage.
3 David said to him, “Where do you come from?” And he said to him,
“I have escaped from the camp of Israel.”
4 And David said to him, “How did it go? Tell me.”
And he answered,
“The people fled from the battle, and also many of the people have fallen and are dead,
and Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead.”
5 Then David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?”
6 And the young man who told him said,
“By chance I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul leaning on his spear, and behold, the chariots and the horsemen were close upon him.
7 And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me.
And I answered, ‘Here I am.’
8 And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’
|
9 And he said to me, ‘Stand beside me and kill me, for anguish has seized me, and yet my life still lingers.’
10 So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was on his head and the armlet that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.”
|
11 Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him.
|
12 And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the Lord
and
for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
|
13 And David said to the young man who told him, “Where Do You Come From ?”
And he answered,
“I am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite.”
14 David said to him,
“How is it you were not afraid to put out your hand to destroy the Lord's anointed?”
|
15 Then David called one of the young men and said,
“Go, execute him.”
And he struck him down so that he died.
|
16 And David said to him,
“Your blood be on your head, for your own mouth has testified against you,
saying,
‘I have killed the Lord's anointed.’”

Elijah Confronts Ahab
When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is it you, you Trouble of Israel?”
7 And as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him. And Obadiah recognized him and fell on his face and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”8 And he answered him, “It is I.
Go, tell your lord, ‘Behold, Elijah is here.’”
9 And he said, “How have I sinned, that you would give your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me? 10 As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. And when they would say, ‘He is not here,’ he would take an oath of the kingdom or nation, that they had not found you.
11 And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here.”’
12 And as soon as I have gone from you, the Spirit of the Lord will carry you I know not where. And so,
when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have feared the Lord from my youth.
|
13 Has it not been told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the Lord,
how I hid a hundred men of the Lord's prophets by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread
and water?
14 And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here”’; and he will kill me.”
15 And Elijah said,
“As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.”
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him.
And Ahab went to meet Elijah.
|
17 When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is it you, you troubler of Israel?”
18 And he answered,
|
“I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father's house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the Lord and followed the Baals.
19 Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel,
and
the 450 prophets of Baal
and
the 400 prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table.”

And so,
