[ Jesus Is Buried ]
57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph,
who also was a disciple of Jesus.
58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him.
59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen-shroud
60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock.
And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away.
61 Mary -Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.
[ The Guard at the Tomb ]
62 The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests
and
the Pharisees gathered before Pilate
63 and said,
“Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive,
‘After three days I will rise.’
64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day,
lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people,
‘He has risen from the dead,’
and the last fraud will be worse than the first.”
65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers.
Go, make it as secure as you can.”
66 So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone
and
setting a guard.

42 And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is,
the day before the Sabbath,
43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God,
took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died.
And summoning the centurion,
he asked him whether he was already dead.
45 And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead,
he granted the corpse to Joseph.
46 And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down,
wrapped him in the linen shroud
and
laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock.
And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.
47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.

[ The Resurrection ]
16 When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James,
and
Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him.
2 And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb.
3 And they were saying to one another,
“Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?”
4 And looking up,
they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large.
5 And entering the tomb,
they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed.
6 And he said to them,
“Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here.
See the place where they laid him.
7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee.
you will see him, just as he told you.”
8 And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them,
and
they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

[ Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene ]
9 [[Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene,
from whom he had cast out seven- demons.
10 She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept.
11 But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her,
they would not believe it.
[ Jesus Appears to Two Disciples ]
12 After these things he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking
into the country.
13 And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.
[ The Great Commission ]
14 Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table,
and
he rebuked them for their unbelief
and
hardness of heart,
because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen.
15 And he said to them,
“Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.
16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved,
but
whoever does not believe will be condemned.
17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons;
they will speak in new tongues;
18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly- poison,
it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick,
and
they will recover.”
19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven
and
sat down at the right hand of God.
20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them
and
confirmed the message by accompanying signs.

The Resurrection
24 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb,
taking the spices they had prepared.
2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 While they were perplexed about this,
behold,
two men stood by them in dazzling apparel.
5 And as they were frightened
and
bowed their faces to the ground,
the men said to them,
“Why do you seek the living among the dead?
6 He is not here, but has risen.
Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,
7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified
and
on the third day rise.”
8 And they remembered his words,
9 and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.
10 Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James
and
the other women with them who told these things to the apostles,
11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale,
and
they did not believe them.
12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.

[ The Resurrection ]
20 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early,
while it was still dark,
and
saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved,
and
said to them,
“They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,
and
we do not know where they have laid him.”
3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb.
4 Both of them were running together,
but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there,
but he did not go in.
6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb.
He saw the linen cloths lying there,
7 and the face cloth,
which had been on Jesus' head,
not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself.
8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in,
and he saw and believed;
9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes.
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb,
and
as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb.
12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain,
one at the head and one at the feet.
13 They said to her,
“Woman, why are you weeping?”
She said to them,
“They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.”
14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing,
but she did not know that it was Jesus.
15 Jesus said to her,
“Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”
Supposing him to be the gardener,
she said to him,
“Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him,
and
I will take him away.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic,
“Rabboni!”
(which means Teacher).
17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father,
to my God and your God.’”
18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples,“I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them,
“Peace be with you.”
20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.
Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me,
even so I am sending you.”
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,
“Receive the Holy Spirit.
23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any,
it is withheld.”
[ Jesus and Thomas ]
24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came.
25 So the other disciples told him,
“We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them,
“Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails,
and
place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side,
I will never believe.”
26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again,
and
Thomas was with them.
Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said,
“Peace be with you.”
27 Then he said to Thomas,
“Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand,
and place it in my side.
Do not disbelieve, but believe.”
28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Jesus said to him,
“Have you believed because you have seen me?
Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
The Purpose of This Book
30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples,
which are not written in this book;
31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,
and
that by believing you may have life in his name.
