Genesis 16
English Standard Version (ESV)
Sarai and Hagar
16 Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children.
She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar.
2 And Sarai said to Abram,
“Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children.
Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children by her.”
And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
3 So, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan,
Sarai, Abram's wife,
took
Hagar the Egyptian, her servant,
and
gave her to Abram her husband as a wife.
4 And he went in to Hagar,
and
she conceived.
And when she saw that she had conceived,
she
looked with contempt on her mistress.(Sarai)
5 And Sarai said to Abram,
“May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my servant to your embrace,
and
when she saw that she had conceived,
she looked on me with contempt.
May the Lord judge between you and me!”
6 But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.”
Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.
7 The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness,
the spring on the way to Shur.
8 And he said,
“Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?”
She said,
“I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai.”
9 The angel of the Lord said to her,
“Return to your mistress and submit to her (Sarai).”
10 The angel of the Lord also said to her,
“I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.”
11 And the angel of the Lord said to her,
“Behold, you are pregnant
and shall bear a son.
You shall call his name Ishmael,
because
the Lord has listened to your affliction.
12 He shall be a wild donkey of a man,
his hand against everyone
and
everyone's hand against him,
and
he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.”
13 So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,”
for she said,
“Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”
14 Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; it lies between Kadesh and Bered.

15 And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

God Rescues Lot
19 The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth 2 and said, “My lords, please turn aside to your servant's house and spend the night and wash your feet. Then you may rise up early and go on your way.” They said, “No; we will spend the night in the town square.” 3 But he pressed them strongly; so they turned aside to him and entered his house. And he made them a feast and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. 4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house. 5 And they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.” 6 Lot went out to the men at the entrance, shut the door after him, 7 and said, “I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. 8 Behold, I have two daughters who have not known any man. Let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.” 9 But they said, “Stand back!” And they said, “This fellow came to sojourn, and he has become the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them.” Then they pressed hard against the man Lot, and drew near to break the door down. 10 But the men reached out their hands and brought Lot into the house with them and shut the door. ____________________________ 11 And they struck with blindness the men who were at the entrance of the house, both small and great, so that they wore themselves out groping for the door. ________________________ Genesis 19 |

Gibeah's Crime
22 As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, worthless fellows, surrounded the house, beating on the door. And they said to the old man, the master of the house, “Bring out the man who came into your house, that we may know him.” 23 And the man, the master of the house, went out to them and said to them, “No, my brothers, do not act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, do not do this vile thing. 24 Behold, here are my virgin daughter and his concubine. Let me bring them out now. Violate them and do with them what seems good to you, but against this man do not do this outrageous thing.” 25 But the men would not listen to him. So the man seized his concubine and made her go out to them. And they knew her and abused her all night until the morning. And as the dawn began to break, they let her go. 26 And as morning appeared, the woman came and fell down at the door of the man's house where her master was, until it was light. Judges 19 |
