/ Withered Right Hand / The Dionysus Sardanapalus is an uncommon Hellenistic-Roman Neo Attic sculpture-type of the god Dionysus, misnamed after the king Sardanapalus. Unlike most contemporary figurations of Dionysus as a lithe youth, the self-consciously archaising god is heavily draped, with an ivy wreath and a long archaic-style beard; probably he bore a thyrsos in a raised right hand, now missing. |
Ashurbanipal was born toward the end of a fifteen-hundred-year period of Assyrian ascendancy.[6]

Ashur-uballit II (Aššur-uballiṭ II) was the last king of the Assyrian empire. He reigned in the last capital city of Harran from 612 BC
to somewhere between 609 and 605 BC, having escaped Nineveh during the siege and capture of that city
by the Babylonian-Mede-Scythian alliance in 612 BC.
In alliance with Egypt, whose dynasty had been installed by the Assyrians, Ashuruballit's army was able to defend Harran from the combined Babylonian-Mede attack for a brief period following the destruction of Nineveh; however, when the Egyptian army were defeated and had to return their homeland in 610 BC, the Babylonians and Medes eventually took Harran and sacked it in 609 BC.
Assyria again called upon its former Egyptian colony, who came to their assistance. King Josiah of Judah allied himself with Babylon and tried to block the way of the forces of Egypt under Pharaoh Necho II. Josiah was defeated and killed at Meggido.
______________________________
/ Pharaoh Necho / Carchemish /
Pharaoh Necho marched on together with Ashur-uballit II, to besiege Harran in 608 BC. They were defeated and the Egyptians retreated into northern Syria. Ashur-uballit II disappears from history, bringing an end to the Assyrian empire. Limmu new-year officials were appointed down to the very end of his recorded reign; his final known year (= 609 BC), known eponymouslyfor the limmu as Gargamišayu ("the Carchemishite"), was the last year ever in history so to receive an official Assyrian name.[1][2]
It is possible that Ashur-uballit was killed in this 2nd siege of Harran in 608 BC, although this is not certain. He may well have survived and been involved in the final Assyrian-Egyptian defeat in the region, at Carchemish in 605 BC, or survived and disappeared into obscurity.[citation needed]
In any event, he was never to arise again.

Ashur-uballit II While it is clear that he was a member of the Assyrian royal family, and that he was a tartan of the Assyrian army
before declaring himself king,
there is some disagreement as to whether or not Ashur-uballit II was the brother of Sinsharishkun, who ruled the empire from 623 BC to 612 BC.
He took his name from Ashur-uballit I, the Assyrian king who had overthrown Mitannian domination in about 1330 BC,
and begun the Middle Assyrian era (1330 BC – 1076 BC).After the death of the all powerful Ashurbanipal, the vast Assyrian Empire began to
unravel due to a series of bitter internal wars over who should rule. Sinsharishkun's rise to power was marred by severe violence,
crippling internal civil war and upheaval within the Assyrian Empire. He had to unseat the usurper Sin-shumu-lishir, and his older brother and predecessor Ashur-etil-ilani who had previously been deposed by Sin-shumu-lishir.
During this confusion a host of Assyria's many colonies and puppet states took advantage of the anarchy to quietly free themselves from Assyrian rule,
most significantly for Assyria these included the Chaldeans, Babylonians, Medes, Persians, Scythians and Cimmerians.[1]

In the early 19th century, Ennio Quirino Visconti cogently argued, against Johann Joachim Winckelmann and other earlier antiquarians,
that the "Sardanapalus" of the Museo Pio-Clementino was in fact a Dionysus.[2]
All the surviving Hellenistic-Roman variants are copied from a Greek original of about 325 BC. The type first occurred at a time when the god's iconography was otherwise changing to a largely youthful and effeminate physical type (as seen, for example, here).
The Romans elaborated the Sardanapalus type further, often showing the god with subsidiary figures.
Though the type appears restrained, multiple copies of a popular relief sculpture exist with a figure of the same type, but drunk and propped up by a satyr.

11 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Say now to the rebellious house,
Do you not know what these things mean? Tell them,
behold,
the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem,
and
took her king and her princes and brought them to him to Babylon.
13 And he took one of the royal offspring and made a covenant with him,
putting him under oath the chief men of the land he had taken away),
14 that the kingdom might be humble and not lift itself up,
and keep his covenant that it might stand.
15 But he rebelled against him by sending his ambassadors to Egypt, that they might give him horses and a large army. Will he thrive? Can one escape who does such things?
Can he break the covenant and yet escape?

Sardanapalus (/ˌsɑrdəˈnæpələs/; sometimes spelled Sardanapallus) was, according to the Greek writer Ctesias of Cnidus, the last king of Assyria, although in actuality Ashur-uballit II (612-605 BC) holds that distinction. Ctesias' Persica is lost, but we know of its contents by later compilations and from the work of Diodorus (II.27). In this account Sardanapalus, supposed to have lived in the 7th century BC, is portrayed as a decadent figure who spends his life in self-indulgence and dies in an orgy of destruction.
/ Chaldeans / Medes / Scythians /

Ashurbanipal (Akkadian: Aššur-bāni-apli; Aramaic: "ܐܵܫܘܿܪ ܒܵܢܝܼ ܐܵܦܠܝܼ"; "Ashur is creator of an heir";[1] 685 BC – c. 627 BC),[2] also spelled Assurbanipal or Ashshurbanipal) was an Assyrian king, the son of Esarhaddon and the last strong king of the Neo-Assyrian Empire (668 BC – c. 627 BC).[2]
He is famed for amassing a significant collection of cuneiform documents for his royal palace at Nineveh.[3]
This collection, known as the Library of Ashurbanipal, is now housed at the British Museum.
In the Bible he is called Asenappar (Ezra 4:10).[4] Roman historian Justinus identified him as Sardanapalus.[5]

His father, Esarhaddon, youngest son of Sennacherib, had become heir when the crown prince, Ashur-nadin-shumi, was deposed by rebels from his position as vassal for Babylon. Esarhaddon was the son not of Sennacherib's queen, Tashmetum-sharrat, but of the West Semitic "palace woman" Zakutu, "the pure" (cf. Modern Standard Arabic زكاة [zakāt], "that which purifies"), known by her native name, Naqi'a.
The only queen known for Esarhaddon was Ashur-hamat, who died in 672 BC.
