Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. With a visual apparent magnitude of −1.46, it is almost twice as bright as Canopus, the next brightest star. The name "Sirius" is derived from the Ancient Greek: Σείριος Seirios ("glowing" or "scorcher"). The star has the Bayer designation Alpha Canis Majoris (α CMa). What the naked eye perceives as a single star is actually a binary star system, consisting of a white main-sequence star of spectral type A1V, termed Sirius A, and a faint white dwarf companion of spectral type DA2, called Sirius B. The distance separating Sirius A from its companion varies between 8.2 and 31.5 AU.[18]

28 “What do you think?
A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said,

29 And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went.
30 And he went to the other son and said the same.
And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go.
31 Which of the two did the will of his father?”
They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them,
“Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God

32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him,
but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him.

18 But they all alike began to make excuses.

Jesus and the Woman of Samaria
4 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making
and
baptizing more disciples than John
2 (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples),
3 he left Judea and departed again for Galilee.
4 And he had to pass through Samaria.
5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob
had given to his son Joseph.
6 Jacob's well was there; so Jesus,
wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well.
It was about the sixth hour.
7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water.
Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”
8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.)
9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me,
a woman of Samaria?”
(For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
10 Jesus answered her,
“If you knew the gift of God,
and
who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him,
and
he would have given you living water.”
11 The woman said to him,
“Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep.
Where do you get that living water?
12 Are you greater than our father Jacob?
He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.”
13 Jesus said to her,
“Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again,
14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.
The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
15 The woman said to him,
“Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”
16 Jesus said to her,
“Go, call your husband, and come here.”
17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.”
Jesus said to her,
“You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’;
18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband.
What you have said is true.”
19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain,
but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.”
21 Jesus said to her,
“Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem
will you worship the Father.
22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.
23 But the hour is coming , and is now here,
when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth,
for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.
24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ).
When he comes, he will tell us all things.”
26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”
27 Just then his disciples came back.
They marveled that he was talking with a woman,
but no one said,
“What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?”
28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people,
29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did.
Can this be the Christ?”
30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.
31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”
32 But he said to them,
“I have food to eat that you do not know about.”
33 So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?”
34 Jesus said to them,
“My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.
35 Do you not say,
‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.
36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering -fruit for eternal life,
so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.
37 For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’
38 I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor.
Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”
39 Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony,
“He told me all that I ever did.”
40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them,
and he stayed there two days.
41 And many more believed because of his word.
42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe,
for we have heard for ourselves,
and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”
43 After the two days he departed for Galilee.
44 (For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.)
45 So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast.
For they too had gone to the feast.

Jesus Heals an Official's Son
46 So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine.
And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill.
47 When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.
48 So Jesus said to him,
“Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.”
49 The official said to him,
“Sir, come down before my child dies.”
50 Jesus said to him,
“Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.
51 As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering.
52 So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him,
“Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”
53 The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him,
“Your son will live.”
And he himself believed, and all his household.
54 This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.

Paul- Sails for Rome
27 And when it was decided that we should sail for Italy, they delivered Paul and some other prisoners to a centurion of the Augustan Cohort named Julius.
2 And embarking in a ship of Adramyttium, which was about to sail to the ports along
the coast of Asia,
we put to sea, accompanied by Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica.
3 The next day we put in at Sidon.
And Julius treated Paul kindly and gave him leave to go to his friends and be cared for.
4 And putting out to sea from there we sailed -under the the lee of Cyprus,
because the winds were against us.
5 And when we had sailed -across the open -sea along the coast of Cilicia and Pamphylia,

9 Since much time had passed,
and
the voyage was now dangerous because even the Fast was already over,
Paul advised them,
10 saying, “Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss,
not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.”

11 But the centurion paid more attention to the pilot and to the owner of the ship than
to what Paul said.
12 And because the harbor was not suitable to spend the winter in,
the majority decided to put out to sea from there,
on the chance that somehow they could reach Phoenix,
a harbor of Crete,
facing both southwest and northwest, and spend the winter there.

The Storm at Sea
13 Now when the south wind blew gently, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed -anchor and sailed along Crete, close to the shore.
14 But soon a tempestuous wind, called the northeaster, struck down from the land.
15 And when the ship was caught and could not face the wind, we gave way to it
and were driven along.
16 Running under the lee of a small island called Cauda, we managed with difficulty
to secure the ship's boat.
17 After hoisting it up, they used supports to undergird the ship.
Then, fearing that they would run aground on the Syrtis, they lowered the gear,
and thus they were driven along.
18 Since we were violently storm-tossed, they began the next day to jettison the cargo.
19 And on the third day they threw the ship's tackle overboard with their own hands.
20 When neither sun -nor- stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest lay on us,
all hope of our being saved was at last abandoned.
21 Since they had been without food for a long time, Paul stood up among them and said, “Men, you should have listened to me and not have set sail from Crete
and incurred this injury and loss.
22 Yet now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you,
but only of the ship.
23 For this very night there stood before me an angel of the God to whom
I belong and whom I worship,
24 and he said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar.
And behold,
God has granted you all those who sail with you.’
25 So take heart, men, for I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told.
26 But we must run aground on some island.”
27 When the fourteenth night had come, as we were being driven across the Adriatic Sea,
about midnight the sailors suspected that they were nearing land.
28 So they took a sounding and found twenty fathoms. A little farther on they took a sounding again and found fifteen fathoms.
29 And fearing that we might run on the rocks, they let down four anchors from the stern
and prayed for day to come.
30 And as the sailors were seeking to escape from the ship, and had lowered the ship's boat into the sea under pretense of laying out anchors from the bow,
31 Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers,
“Unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved.”
32 Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the ship's boat and let it go.
33 As day was about to dawn, Paul urged them all to take some food,
saying,
“Today is the fourteenth day that you have continued in suspense and without food,
having taken nothing.
34 Therefore I urge you to take some food. For it will give you strength, for not a hair is to perish from the head of any of you.”
35 And when he had said these things, he took bread,
and
giving thanks to God in the presence of all he broke it and began to eat.
36 Then they all were encouraged and ate some food themselves.
37 (We were in all 276 persons in the ship.)
38 And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, throwing out the wheat into the sea.

The Shipwreck
39 Now when it was day, they did not recognize the land, but they noticed a bay with a beach,
on which they planned if possible to run the ship ashore.
40 So they cast off the anchors and left them in the sea, at the same time loosening
the ropes that tied the rudders.
Then hoisting the foresail to the wind they made for the beach.
41 But striking a reef, they ran the vessel aground. The bow stuck and remained immovable,
and the stern was being broken up by the surf.
42 The soldiers' plan was to kill the prisoners, lest any should swim away and escape.
43 But the centurion, wishing to save Paul, kept them from carrying out their plan.
He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first
and
make for the land,
44 and the rest on planks or on pieces of the ship.
And
so it was that all were brought safely to land.
