Zoar was founded by German religious dissenters called the Society of Separatists of Zoar in 1817.[4]
It was named after the Biblical village to which Lot and his family escaped from Sodom.[5]
It was a communal society, with many German-style structures that have been restored and are part of the Zoar Village State Memorial.
There are presently ten restored buildings. According to the Ohio Historical Society, Zoar is an island of Old-World charm in east-central Ohio.[6]
The Separatists, or Zoarites, emigrated from the kingdom of Württemberg in southwestern Germany due to religious oppression from the Lutheran church. Leading among their group were some natives of Rottenacker on the Danube.
Having separated from the established church, their theology was based in part on the writings of Jakob Böhme.
They did not practice baptism or confirmation and did not celebrate religious holidays except for the Sabbath.
A central flower garden in Zoar is based on the Book of Revelation with a towering tree in the middle representing Christ and other elements surrounding it representing other allegorical elements.

Galatia was named for the immigrant Gauls from Thrace (cf.Tylis), who settled here and became its ruling caste
in the 3rd century BC,
following the Gallic invasion of the Balkans in 279 BC. It has been called the "Gallia" of the East,

Decimus Junius Brutus Callaicus (or Gallaecus or Callaecus) (180 BC – 113 BC) was a consul of theRoman Republic for the year 138 BC together with Publius Cornelius Scipio Nasica Serapio.[1] He was anoptimate politician and a military commander in Hispania and in Illyria. He was the son of Marcus Junius Brutus (consul in 178 BC) and brother of Marcus Junius Brutus (praetor in 88 BC). He had a son also namedDecimus Junius Brutus (consul in 77 BC) and his grandson was Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus.
Deciumus Iunius Brutus belonged to the optimates, a political faction which supported the interests of the aristocracy and was opposed to the plebeian tribunes (the representatives of the plebs) and populares, a political faction which championed the cause of the poor and wanted reforms to help them. During his consulship he and his colleague P. Cornelius Scipio Nasica, opposed the plebeian tribunes.
The plebeian tribune Gaius Curiatus sent both consuls to prison[2] because they did not allow the plebeian tribunes to select ten men
who would be exempt from military service.[3]
The two consuls also opposed a proposal by the tribunes to purchase grain from abroad because the price of grain was going up.
Scipio Nasica made a speech which quietened the restless plebs.[4]

Brutus, or Brute of Troy, is a legendary descendant of the Trojan hero Aeneas, known in medieval British legend as the eponymous founder and first king of Britain. This legend first appears in the Historia Britonum, an anonymous 9th-century historical compilation to which commentary was added by Nennius, but is best known from the account given by the 12th-century chronicler Geoffrey of Monmouth in his Historia Regum Britanniae. However, he is not mentioned in any classical text and is not considered to be historical.

The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath, Togarmah
Following Roman sources such as Livy and Virgil, the Historia tells how Aeneas settled in Italy after the Trojan War, and how his son Ascanius founded Alba Longa, one of the precursors of Rome. Ascanius married, and his wife became pregnant. In a variant version, the father is Silvius, who is identified as either the second son of Aeneas, previously mentioned in the Historia, or as the son of Ascanius. A magician, asked to predict the child's future, said it would be a boy and that he would be the bravest and most beloved in Italy. Enraged, Ascanius had the magician put to death. The mother died in childbirth.
The boy, named Brutus, later accidentally killed his father with an arrow and was banished from Italy. After wandering among the islands of the Tyrrhenian Sea and through Gaul, where he founded the city of Tours, Brutus eventually came to Britain, named it after himself, and filled it with his descendants. His reign is synchronised to the time the High Priest Eli was judge in Israel, and when the Ark of the Covenant was taken by the Philistines.[2]
A variant version of the Historia Britonum makes Brutus the son of Ascanius's son Silvius, and traces his genealogy back to Ham, son of Noah.[3]
Another chapter traces Brutus's genealogy differently, making him the great-grandson of the legendary Roman king Numa Pompilius,
who was himself a son of Ascanius, and tracing his descent from Noah's son Japheth.[4] These Christianising traditions conflict with the classical Trojan genealogies, relating the Trojan royal family to Greek gods.
Yet another Brutus, son of Hisicion, son of Alanus the first European, also traced back across many generations to Japheth, is referred to in the Historia Britonum. This Brutus's brothers were Francus, Alamanus and Romanus, also ancestors of significant European nations.[5]

Lucius Caecilius Iucundus was a banker who lived in the Roman town of Pompeii around 20–62 AD. His house still stands and can be seen in the ruins of the city Pompeii. It was partially destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. This house is known for its beauty, along with some material found about bank book-keeping and wax tablets, which were receipts. He is well known for being the main character in the Cambridge Latin Course series.

The Pompeian banker Iucundus was born around the end of Augustus’s reign (c. 14 AD) to a freedman named Felix, who was also a banker.[1] In his mid-fifties he was probably well-established as a successful banker who dealt with a wide variety of Pompeians.[2] Freedmen and slaves performed many small business tasks for Iucundus, such as signing receipts as witnesses and collecting payments from clients. Many names of elite Pompeian citizens occur frequently in his transaction records, suggesting that Iucundus also had dealings with the upper class of his town. In fact, he even traveled to nearby Nuceria to help the wealthy Praetorian Guard senior centurion Publius Alfenus Varus resell some slaves that he had purchased in an auction.[3]

Postumus Cominius Auruncus was a two-time consul of the early Roman Republic.
In 501 BC, Cominius was consul with Titus Lartius, who Livy says was appointed as the first dictator of Rome.[1] Other sources indicate the beginnings of hostilities with the Latins and a conspiracy among slaves during their term.[2]
As the consuls of 493 BC, Cominius and Spurius Cassius Viscellinus were elected towards the end of the First secessio plebis in 494 BC.[3] They also conducted a census.[4]
Cominius achieved a military victory against the Volsci. He initially defeated a force from the town of Antium, then took the towns of Longula (to the north of Antium) and Pollusca. He laid siege to the town of Corioli and despite being attacked by a second force of Volsci from Antium, he achieved victory through the distinguished actions of Gaius Marcius Coriolanus, and captured Corioli.[5]
In 488, he was among the envoys (legati), all of consular rank, sent to Coriolanus.[6]

A puzzling and textually incomplete passage in Festus[7] lists Cominius among several men who were burned publicly near the Circus Maximus in 486 BC.Valerius Maximus says that a tribune of the plebs burned nine colleagues for conspiring with Spurius Cassius Vicellinus, a consul in this year who plotted to make himself king.[8] Since the plebeian tribunes numbered ten only much later, and since the listed names indicate that the men were of consular rank andpatrician status, this incident during the Volscian Wars remains mysterious.[9]

Plebeian Claudii are found fairly early in Rome's history. Some may have been descended from members of the family who had passed over to the plebeians, while others were probably the descendants of freedmen of the gens.[1]
Gaius Gracchus was born into a family who had a strong tradition in the politics of ancient Rome. His father,Tiberius Gracchus the Elder, was a powerful man in Roman politics throughout the 2nd century BC and had built up a large and powerful clientele largely based in Spain. His mother was Cornelia Africana, daughter of Scipio Africanus, a noble woman who was a major influence on the Gracchi; as a widow, she refused the marriage proposal of Ptolemy VIII, the King of Egypt, preferring to devote her life to the upbringing of her sons.[1]
The family was attached to the Claudii faction in Roman politics despite his mother's background. It can be supposed, however, that both the Gracchi brothers would have come into contact with powerful members of both the Claudii and Cornelii Scipiones factions.[1]
Gaius Gracchus was the younger brother of Tiberius Gracchus, by about nine years. He was heavily influenced both by the reformative policy of his older brother, and by his death at the hands of a senatorial mob. Plutarch suggests that it was "the grief he had suffered [that] encouraged him to speak out fearlessly, whenever he lamented the fate of his brother."[2] Certainly aspects of his reforms, and especially his judicial reforms, seem to have been directed at the people responsible for his brother's death.
The family was attached to the Claudii faction in Roman politics despite his mother's background. It can be supposed, however, that both the Gracchi brothers would have come into contact with powerful members of both the Claudii and Cornelii Scipiones factions.[1]

Again he occupied Syria, and again—after only a few months, when Demetrius had won a battle over his general, and Antigonus entered Syria in force—he evacuated it. In 311, a peace was concluded between the combatants. Soon after this, the surviving 13-year-old king, Alexander IV, was murdered in Macedonia on the orders of Cassander, leaving the satrap of Egypt absolutely his own master.

The last scion of the dynasty, Perseus of Macedon, who reigned between 179-168 BC, proved unable to stop the advancing Roman legions and Macedon's defeat at the Battle of Pydna signaled the end of the dynasty.[3]

His father was Arruns Tarquinius, son of Demaratus of Corinth. Demaratus had settled at Tarquinii during the seventh century BC,
and married an Etruscan noblewoman.
They had two sons, Lucius and Arruns. Arruns died shortly before his father, leaving his wife pregnant. Not knowing of his grandson,
Demaratus left him no inheritance, and so Arruns was born into poverty despite his grandfather's wealth.
For this reason, the child was called Egerius, meaning "the needy one."
At the urging of his wife, Tanaquil, Lucius Tarquinius migrated to Rome, where he found favour with the king, Ancus Marcius.
Ultimately, Tarquin succeeded Marcius as the fifth King of Rome.
After subduing the Latin town of Collatia, Tarquin placed his nephew in command of the Roman garrison there.
Arruns' son was Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus, one of the first Roman consuls in 509 BC.
The rape of Collatinus' wife, Lucretia, by his cousin, Sextus Tarquinius, was the event that sparked the expulsion of the Roman kings.
Ironically, public hatred of the Tarquins led Collatinus himself to resign the consulship and go into exile.[1]

Publius Valerius Poplicola or Publicola (d. 503 BC) was one of four Roman aristocrats who led the overthrow of the monarchy, and became a Roman consul, the colleague of Lucius Junius Brutus in 509 BC, traditionally considered the first year of the Roman Republic. The authors of America's The Federalist Papers used the pseudonym "Publius" in his honour.[1]

After assuming control of government, Caesar began a programme of social and governmental reforms, including the creation of the Julian calendar. He centralized the bureaucracy of the Republic and was eventually proclaimed "dictator in perpetuity", giving him additional authority.
But the underlying political conflicts had not been resolved, and on the Ides of March (15 March) 44 BC,
Caesar was assassinated by a group of rebellious senators led by Marcus Junius Brutus.
A new series of civil wars broke out, and the constitutional government of the Republic was never fully restored. Caesar's adopted heir Octavian,
later known as Augustus, rose to sole power after defeating his opponents in the civil war.
Octavian set about solidifying his power, and the era of the Roman Empire began.

Oligarchy (from Greek ὀλιγαρχία (oligarkhía); from ὀλίγος (olígos), meaning "few", and ἄρχω (arkho), meaning "to rule or to command")[1][2][3] is a form of power structure in which power effectively rests with a small number of people. These people might be distinguished by royalty, wealth, family ties, education, corporate, religious or military control. Such states are often controlled by a few prominent families who typically pass their influence from one generation to the next, but inheritance is not a necessary condition for the application of this term.
Throughout history, oligarchies have often been tyrannical, relying on public obedience or oppression to exist.Aristotle pioneered the use of the term as a synonym for rule by the rich,[4] for which another term commonly used today is plutocracy.
Especially during the fourth century BC, after the restoration of democracy from oligarchical coups, the Athenians used the drawing of lots for selecting government officers in order to counteract what the Athenians saw as a tendency toward oligarchy in government if a professional governing class were allowed to use their skills for their own benefit.[5][page needed] They drew lots from large groups of adult volunteers that pick selection technique for civil servants performing judicial, executive, and administrative functions (archai, boulē, and hēliastai).[6] They even used lots for posts, such as judges and jurors in the political courts (nomothetai), which had the power to overrule the Assembly.[7]

The English-speaking and western media have borrowed the term Russian oligarch (a near-synonym of the term "business oligarch" or "business magnate") from Russian parlance to describe the huge, wealth of some businessmen of the former Soviet republics that some believe was fast-acquired but other know was the Blat (favors) masters of URSS, (mostly Russia and Ukraine) during privatization in Russia after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the 1990s. Businessmen with great wealth from these countries were[when?] commonly labeled (simply) "oligarchs" in Russian - regardless of whether they had real political power, as the term "oligarch" might imply. Analysts[which?] have drawn comparisons between the current Russian system of oligarchs and the system of powerful Boyars that emerged in late-Medieval Muscovy.[1]
The Russian oligarchs are business entrepreneurs who emerged under Mikhail Gorbachev (General Secretary 1985-1991)
during his period of market liberalization.

Blat Favors
In Russian culture, blat (Russian: блат) is the system of informal agreements, exchanges of services, connections, Party contacts, or black market deals to achieve results or get ahead.[1] The system of blat can be seen as an example of social networks with some similarities to networking (especially 'good ol' boy' networks) in the United States, old boy networks in the United Kingdom and the former British Empire,[2] or guanxi in China.[3] Accordingly, blatnoymeans a man who obtains a job or gets into a university using connections, or sometimes bribes. In the Soviet republics, blatnye were very much in demand as it was difficult to gain a post or enroll in some prestigious majors in universities without proper connections.

Antiochus of Syracuse was a Greek historian, who flourished around 420 BC.
Little is known of his life, but his works, of which only fragments remain, enjoyed a high reputation because of their accuracy.
He wrote a History of Sicily from the earliest times to 424 BC, which was used by Thucydides, and the Colonizing of Italy, frequently referred to by Strabo and Dionysius of Halicarnassus.[1]
