Tiglath-Pileser III described himself as a son of Adad-nirari in his inscriptions, but it is uncertain if this is truthful.
|
Adad-nirari was a son and successor of king Shamshi-Adad V, and was apparently quite young at the time of his accession,
because for the first five years of his reign, his mother Shammuramat[2] was highly influential, which may have given rise to the legend of Semiramis.[3]It is widely rejected that his mother acted as regent, but she was surprisingly influential for the time period.[4]
Adad-nirari -He was the father of kings Ashur-nirari V, Shalmaneser IV, and Ashur-dan III.

Shamshi-ilu probably was not born in Assyria, though he was from noble linage of the Bit-Adini tribe and was more than likely educated at the Assyrian court. Later, he rose in the ranks of the Assyrian army to become the commander in chief (turtanu)
who had a high degree of influence over the kings of Assyria who lived in his time.
He was probably made governor when Shalmaneser III annexed the territories of the Bit-Adini.

Bit Adini, a city or region of Syria, called sometimes Bit Adini in Assyrian sources, was an Aramaean state that existed as an independent kingdom during the 10th and 9th centuries BC, with its capital at Til Barsib (now Tell Ahmar).[1] In 856 BC, the kingdom was conquered and absorbed into the Assyrian Empire during the reign of Shalmaneser III. It is usually thought to have been in the bend of the Euphrates River, south of Carchemish.

Formerly the governor of Kalhu (Biblical Calah/Nimrud)[3] and a general, the usurper Pulu assumed his Assyrian throne-name (Tiglath-Pileser) from two more-legitimate predecessors. He described himself as a son of Adad-nirari III in his inscriptions, but the accuracy of this claim remains uncertain. He seized the throne in the midst of civil war on 13 Ayaru, 745 BCE.[1][5] As a result of Pulu seizing the throne in a bloody coup d'état, the old royal family was slaughtered,[3] and the new monarch set Assyria on the path to expand the empire in order to ensure the survival of the kingdom.[3]

- Tiglath-Pileser I, king of Assyria from 1115 to 1077 BC
- Tiglath-Pileser II, king of Assyria from 967 to 935 BC
- Tiglath-Pileser III, or Tiglath-Pileser IV, king of Assyria from 745 to 727 BC
The Assyrian captivity (or Assyrian exile) is the period in Jewish history during which a number of Jews of the ancient Kingdom of Israel were captives in Assyria. The Northern Kingdom of Israel was conquered by the Neo-Assyrian monarchs, Tiglath-Pileser III (Pul) and Shalmaneser V. The later Assyrian rulers Sargon II and his son and successor, Sennacherib, were responsible for finishing the twenty-year demise of Israel's northern ten-tribe kingdom, although they did not overtake the Southern Kingdom. Jerusalem was besieged, but not taken. The tribes exiled by Assyria later became known as the Ten Lost Tribes.

Chapter 10
35 And in the second year after the tower a man from the house of Ashur, whose name was Bela, went from the land of Ninevah to sojourn with his household wherever he could find a place; and they came until opposite the cities of the plain against Sodom, and they dwelt there.
36 And the man rose up and built there a small city, and called its name Bela, after his name; that is the land of Zoar unto this day.

Judah and Tamar
|
24 About three months later Judah was told, “Tamar your daughter-in-law has been immoral.
Moreover, she is pregnant by immorality.”
And Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burned.”
25 As she was being brought out, she sent word to her father-in-law,
“By the man to whom these belong, I am pregnant.” And she said,
“Please identify whose these are, the signet and the cord and the staff.”
26 Then Judah identified them and said,
“She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.”
And he did not know her again.

Laws Concerning Levirate Marriage
5 “If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son,
the wife of the dead man shall not be married outside the family to a stranger.
Her husband's brother shall go in to her and take her as his wife
and
perform the duty of a husband's brother to her.
6 And the first son whom she bears shall succeed to the name of his dead brother,
that his name may not be blotted out of Israel.
7 And if the man does not wish to take his brother's wife, then his brother's wife shall go up to the gate to the elders and say,
‘My husband's brother refuses to perpetuate his brother's name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a husband's brother to me.’
8 Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak to him, and if he persists, saying,
‘I do not wish to take her,’
9 then his brother's wife shall go up to him in the presence of the elders
and
pull his sandal off his foot and spit in his face. And she shall answer and say,
‘So shall it be done to the man
who does not
build up his brother's house.’

|

[ Punishment Coming for Israel and Judah ]
Hear this, O priests! Pay attention, O house of Israel! Give ear, O house of the king!
For the judgment is for you;
for you have been a snare at Mizpah
and
a net spread upon Tabor.
|
And the revolters have gone deep into slaughter,
but I will discipline all of them.
3 I know Ephraim,
and Israel is not hidden from me;
for now, O Ephraim, you have played the whore;
Israel is defiled.
4 Their deeds do not permit them
to return to their God.
For the spirit of whoredom is within them,
and they know not the Lord.
5 The pride of Israel testifies to his face;
Israel and Ephraim shall stumble in his guilt;
Judah also shall stumble with them.
6 With their flocks and herds they shall go
to seek the Lord,
but they will not find him;
he has withdrawn from them.
7 They have dealt faithlessly with the Lord;
for they have borne alien children.
Now the new moon shall devour them with their fields.
8 Blow the horn in Gibeah,
the trumpet in Ramah.
Sound the alarm at Beth-aven;
we follow you, O Benjamin!
9 Ephraim shall become a desolation
in the day of punishment;
among the tribes of Israel
I make known what is sure.
10 The princes of Judah have become
like those who move the landmark;
upon them I will pour out
my wrath like water.
11 Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgment,
because he was determined to go after filth.
12 But I am like a moth to Ephraim,
and like dry rot to the house of Judah.
13 When Ephraim saw his sickness,
and Judah his wound,
then Ephraim went to Assyria,
and sent to the great king.
But he is not able to cure you
or heal your wound.
14 For I will be like a lion to Ephraim,
and like a young lion to the house of Judah.
I, even I, will tear and go away;
I will carry off, and no one shall rescue.
15 I will return again to my place,
until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face,
and in their distress earnestly seek me.

2 The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth
and
upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground
and
all the fish of the sea.
Into your hand they are delivered.
3 Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you.
And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything.
4 But you shall not eat flesh with its life,
that is, its blood.
5 And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it
and
from man.
From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man.
6 “Whoever sheds the blood of man,
by man shall his blood be shed,
for God made man in his own image.

Genesis 9
[ Punishment Coming for Israel and Judah ]
Hear this, O priests! Pay attention, O house of Israel! Give ear, O house of the king!
For the judgment is for you;
for you have been a snare at Mizpah
and
a net spread upon Tabor.
|
And the revolters have gone deep into slaughter,
but I will discipline all of them.
3 I know Ephraim,
and Israel is not hidden from me;
for now, O Ephraim, you have played the whore;
Israel is defiled.
4 Their deeds do not permit them
to return to their God.
For the spirit of whoredom is within them,
and they know not the Lord.
5 The pride of Israel testifies to his face;
Israel and Ephraim shall stumble in his guilt;
Judah also shall stumble with them.
6 With their flocks and herds they shall go
to seek the Lord,
but they will not find him;
he has withdrawn from them.
7 They have dealt faithlessly with the Lord;
for they have borne alien children.
Now the new moon shall devour them with their fields.
8 Blow the horn in Gibeah,
the trumpet in Ramah.
Sound the alarm at Beth-aven;
we follow you, O Benjamin!
9 Ephraim shall become a desolation
in the day of punishment;
among the tribes of Israel
I make known what is sure.
10 The princes of Judah have become
like those who move the landmark;
upon them I will pour out
my wrath like water.
11 Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgment,
because he was determined to go after filth.
12 But I am like a moth to Ephraim,
and like dry rot to the house of Judah.
13 When Ephraim saw his sickness,
and Judah his wound,
then Ephraim went to Assyria,
and sent to the great king.
But he is not able to cure you
or heal your wound.
14 For I will be like a lion to Ephraim,
and like a young lion to the house of Judah.
I, even I, will tear and go away;
I will carry off, and no one shall rescue.
15 I will return again to my place,
until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face,
and in their distress earnestly seek me.
