[ The Parable of the Sower ]
4 Again he began to teach beside the sea.
And a very large crowd gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land.
2 And he was teaching them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: 3 “Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow.
4 And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path,
and
the birds came and devoured it.
5 Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil.
6 And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root,
it withered away.
7 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it,
and
it yielded no grain.
8 And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing
and
yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.”
9 And he said,
“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

[ The Parable of the Sower Explained ]
18 “Hear then the parable of the sower:
19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it,
the evil one comes
and
snatches away what has been sown in his heart.
This is what was sown along the path.
20 As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy,
21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away.
22 As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word,
but the cares of the world
and
the deceitfulness of riches choke the word,
and
it proves unfruitful.
23 As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it.
He indeed bears fruit and yields,
in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

[ The Parable of the Seed Growing ]
26 And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground.
27 He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows;
he knows not how.
28 The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear,
then the full grain in the ear.
29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle,
because the harvest has come.”

[ The Parable of the Mustard Seed ]
30 And he said,
“With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it?
31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground,
is the smallest of all the seeds on earth,
32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants
and puts out large branches,
so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”
33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it.
34 He did not speak to them without a parable,
but
privately to his own disciples he explained everything.

[ The Parable of the Lost -Sheep ]
10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.
12 What do you think?
If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray?
13 And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray.
14 So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

[ The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant ]
21 Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me,
and
I forgive him? As many as seven times?”
22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times,
but seventy-seven times.
23 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants.
24 When he began to settle,
one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.
25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children
and
all that he had, and payment to be made.
26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him,
‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’
27 And out of pity for him,
the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.
28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying,
‘Pay what you owe.’
29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him,
‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’
30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt.
31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed,
and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place.
32 Then his master summoned him and said to him,
‘You wicked servant!
I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me.
33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant,
as I had mercy on you?’
34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt.
35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you,
if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

[ The Parable of the Tenants ]
33 “Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard
and
put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants,
and went into another country.
34 When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit.
35 And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another,
and stoned another.
36 Again he sent other servants, more than the first.
And they did the same to them.
37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’
38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves,
‘This is the heir.
Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’
39 And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
40 When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”
41 They said to him,
“He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants
who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”
42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
“‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?
43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits.
44 And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone,
it will crush him.”
45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that
he was speaking about them.
46 And although they were seeking to arrest him, they feared the crowds,
because they held him to be a prophet.

[ The Parable of the Lost Sheep ]
15 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him.
2 And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying,
“This man receives sinners and eats with them.”
3 So he told them this parable: 4 “What man of you, having a hundred sheep,
if he has lost one of them,
does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country,
and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?
5 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders,
rejoicing.
6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors,
saying to them,
‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’
7 Just so, I tell you,
there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

[ The Parable of the Lost Coin ]
8 “Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp
and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it?
9 And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors,
saying,
‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’
10 Just so,
I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

[ The Parable of the Prodigal Son ]
11 And he said, “There was a man who had two sons.
12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them.
13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living.
14 And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country,
and he began to be in need.
15 So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.
16 And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything.
17 “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger!
18 I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him,
“Father,
I have sinned against heaven and before you.
19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’
20 And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.
21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
22 But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23 And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate.
24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.
25 “Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant.
27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound.’
28 But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him,
29 but he answered his father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends.
30 But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’
31 And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.
32 It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’”

[ The Parable of the Dishonest Manager ]
16 He also said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his possessions.
2 And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you?
Turn in the account of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’
3 And the manager said to himself,
‘What shall I do, since my master is taking the management away from me?
I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg.
4 I have decided what to do, so that when I am removed from management,
people may receive me into their houses.’
5 So, summoning his master's debtors one by one, he said to the first,
‘How much do you owe my master?’
6 He said,
‘A hundred measures of oil.’
He said to him,
‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’
7 Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’
He said,
‘A hundred measures of wheat.’
He said to him,
‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’
8 The master commended the dishonest manager for his shrewdness.
For the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation
than the sons of light.
9 And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth,
so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.
10 “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.
11 If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth,
who will entrust to you the true riches?
12 And if you have not been faithful in that which is another's,
who will give you that which is your own?
13 No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other,
or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.
You cannot serve God and money.”

[ The Parable of the Persistent Widow ]
18 And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray
and
not lose heart.
2 He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man.
3 And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying,
‘Give me justice against my adversary.’
4 For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself,
‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man,
5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’”
|
6 And the Lord said,
“Hear what the unrighteous judge says.
7 And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night?
Will he delay long over them?
8 I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily.
Nevertheless, when the Son of Man -comes, will he find faith on earth?”

[ The Purpose of the Parables ]
10 And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables.
11 And he said to them,
“To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God,
but for those outside everything is in parables,
12 so that
“‘they may indeed see but not perceive,
and
may indeed hear but not understand,
lest they should turn and be forgiven.’”
13 And he said to them,
“Do you not understand this parable?
How then will you understand all the parables?
14 The sower sows the word.
15 And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown: when they hear,
Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them.
16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy.
17 And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away.
18 And others are the ones sown among thorns.
They are those who hear the word,
19 but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.
20 But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word
and
accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.”

14 “For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants
and entrusted to them his property.
15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability.
Then he went away.
16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them,
and he made five talents more.
17 So also he who had the two talents made two talents more.
18 But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money.
19 Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them.
20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more,
saying,
‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’
21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.
You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much.
Enter into the joy of your master.’
22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’
23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.
You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much.
Enter into the joy of your master.’
24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying,
‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow,
and gathering where you scattered no seed,
25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground.
Here, you have what is yours.’
26 But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant!
You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed?
27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers,
and
at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest.
28 So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents.
29 For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance.
But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
30 And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness.
In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
