Clovis (Latin Chlodovechus; reconstructed Frankish Chlodowig;[1] c. 466 – c. 511) was the first king of the Franks to unite all of the Frankish tribes under one ruler, changing the form of leadership from a group of royal chieftains to rule by a single king and ensuring that the kingship was passed down to his heirs.[2] He is considered the founder of the Merovingian dynasty, which ruled the Franks for the next two centuries.

The Merovingian kings responsible for the conquest of Gaul are thought to have had Salian ancestry.
Clovis was the son of Childeric I, a Merovingian king of the Salian Franks, and Basina, Queen of Thuringia, and he succeeded his father in 481, at the age of fifteen.[3] He conquered the remaining rump state of the Western Roman Empire at the Battle of Soissons (486), and by his death in 511 he had conquered much of the northern and western parts of what had formerly been Roman Gaul.

The Salian Franks (Latin: Salii) were a subgroup of the early Franks who first appear in the historical records in the 3rd century AD. At that time they lived north of the Rhine delta in the modern day Netherlands and therefore north of the limes of Roman Gaul, which ran along the Rhine. They were characterised as both warlike Germanic people and pirates, and as Laeti (allies of the Romans). Shortly thereafter, they became the first Germanic tribe from beyond thelimes to settle permanently on Roman land. After moving into Batavia, a border island in the Rhine, in 358, they came to some form of agreement with the Romans who allowed them to settle south of the Rhine in Toxandria(roughly the area of the current Dutch and Belgian provinces of Noord-Brabant, Antwerpen and the northern "Kempen" (French Campine) part of Belgian Limburg).
Over time, the Salians fully adopted the Frankish identity and ceased to appear by their original name from the 7th century onward, when they evolved into the Franks par excellence.[2] The Lex Ripuaria originated about 630 around Cologne and has been described as a later development of the Frankish laws known from Lex Salica. TheMerovingian kings responsible for the conquest of Gaul are thought to have had Salian ancestry.
Clovis is important in the historiography of France as "the first king of what would become France".[4] His name, a Germanic name composed of the elements hlod "fame" and wig "combat", is the origin of the later French given name Louis, borne by 18 kings of France.

Clovis is also extremely significant due to his conversion to Catholicism in 496, largely at the behest of his wife, Clotilde, who would later be venerated as a saint for this act. The adoption of Catholicism by Clovis led to a widespread conversion to Christianity among the Frankish peoples, installing Catholicism all across modern-day France and Germany, and leading to Charlemagne's alliance with the pope and birth of the early Holy Roman Empire.

The Clovis culture is a prehistoric Paleo-Indian culture, named after distinct stone tools found at sites near Clovis, New Mexico, in the 1920s and 1930s. The Clovis culture appears around 11,500–11,000 uncal RCYBP[1] (uncalibrated radiocarbon years before present), at the end of the last glacial period, and is characterized by the manufacture of "Clovis points" and distinctive bone and ivory tools. Archaeologists' most precise determinations at present suggest that this radiocarbon age is equal to roughly 13,200 to 12,900 calendar years ago. Clovis people are considered to be the ancestors of most of the indigenous cultures of the Americas.[2][3][4]
Sites in Alaska (East Beringia) are where some of the earliest evidence has been found of Paleo-Indians,[20][21][22] followed by archaeological sites in northern British Columbia, western Alberta and the Old Crow Flats region in the Yukon.[23]
