Tannaim (Hebrew: תנאים [tanaˈʔim], singular תנא [taˈna], Tanna "repeaters", "teachers"[1]) were the Rabbinic sages whose views are recorded in the Mishnah, from approximately 10-220 CE. The period of the Tannaim, also referred to as the Mishnaic period, lasted about 210 years. It came after the period of the Zugot ("pairs"), and was immediately followed by the period of the Amoraim ("interpreters")[2]
The root tanna (תנא) is the Talmudic Aramaic equivalent for the Hebrew root shanah (שנה), which also is the root-word of Mishnah. The verbshanah (שנה) literally means "to repeat [what one was taught]" and is used to mean "to learn".
The Mishnaic period is commonly divided up into five periods according to generations. There are approximately 120 known Tannaim.
The Tannaim lived in several areas of the Land of Israel. The spiritual center of Judaism at that time was Jerusalem, but after the destruction of the city and the Second Temple, Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakai and his students founded a new religious center in Yavne.

Some Tannaim worked as laborers (e.g., charcoal burners, cobblers) in addition to their positions as teachers and legislators.
They were also leaders of the people and negotiators with the Roman Empire.

Rabbi Eleazar ben [son of] Shimon) was a Jewish Tanna sage of the fifth generation, contemporary of R. Judah haNasi. He is also the son of R. Shimon bar Yochai. During his youth he was wanted by the Roman government, but later on worked on behalf of the Roman government as a security and public order commissioner. There are various legendary stories concerning his unusual physical size. Towards the end of his life he chose to be tormented by pain. Almost all Gerrer Hasidim living in pre-war Europe (approximately 200,000 Hasidim) were murdered by the Nazis in the Holocaust.[citation needed] Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter, who managed to escape, set about the task of rebuilding the movement in the British Mandate of Palestine.
Under its post-war leaders, the movement began to flourish again. Presently, on major occasions such as Shavuos, more than 12,000 Hasidim may gather in the main Gerrer beth midrash.

The Yiddish term rebbe comes from the Hebrew word rabbi, meaning "My Master", which is the way a student would address a master of Torah. It was an honorific originally given to those who had Smicha in the Pharisaic and Talmudic era. Since vowels were not written at the time, it is impossible to know historically whether it was pronounced rah-bee (/ˈrɑːbi/) or r-bee (/ˈrɛbi/). The English word rabbi (/ˈræbaɪ/) comes directly from this form. In Yiddish, the word became reb-eh (/ˈrɛbɛ/)—now commonly spelled rebbe (/ˈrɛbə/—or just reb (/ˈrɛb/). The word master רב rav [ˈʁäv] literally means "great one".

Esther Saves the Jews
The king's scribes
were summoned at that time, in the third month,
which is the month of Sivan, on the twenty-third day.
And
an edict was written,
according to all that Mordecai commanded concerning the Jews,
to the satraps
and
the governors
and
the officials of the provinces from India to Ethiopia, 127 provinces,
to each province in its own script
and
to each people in its own language,
and
also to the Jews in their script
and
their language.

Esther Saves the Jews
15 Then Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal -robes of blue and white,
with a great golden crown and a robe of fine linen and purple,
and
the city of Susa shouted and rejoiced.
16 The Jews had light and gladness and joy and honor.
17 And in every province and in every city, wherever the king's command and his edict reached, there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a feast and a holiday.
And many from the peoples of the country declared themselves Jews,
for fear of the Jews had fallen on them.

The Jews Destroy Their Enemies
3 All the officials of the provinces and the satraps and the governors
and
the royal agents also helped the Jews, for the fear of Mordecai had fallen on them.
4 For Mordecai was great in the king's house,
and
his fame spread throughout all the provinces, for the man Mordecai grew more
and more powerful.
5 The Jews struck all their enemies with the sword, killing and destroying them,
and
did as they pleased to those who hated them.
6 In Susa the citadel itself the Jews killed and destroyed 500 men,

Genesis 9
English Standard Version (ESV)
9 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them,
“Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
2 The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth
and
upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground
and
all the fish of the sea.
Into your hand they are delivered.
3 Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you.
And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything.
4 But you shall not eat flesh with its life,
that is, its blood.
5 And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it
and
from man.
From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man.
6 “Whoever sheds the blood of man,
by man shall his blood be shed,
for God made man in his own image.
