Kashtariti (Akkadian: Kaš-ta-ri-ti, Old Persian: Khshathrita; fl. 670s BCE) was a Median chieftain. He is mentioned as "King of the Medes" in an inscription dated 678 BCE.[1] His lands were presumably located along the northeastern border of Assyria. Amongst his possessions was the city of Karkašši.[2] Kashtariti forged an alliance with the Gimirrites (Cimmerians), Mannaeans, Medes and Scythians against Assyria.[3]
It has been suggested that Kashtariti can be identified as Median king Phraortes.
Some scholars, however, deny such a connection based on historical evidence and linguistic differences in the native Iranian names of the two rulers.[16]
Like his father Deioces, Phraortes started wars against Assyria, but was defeated and killed by Ashurbanipal,
the king of the Neo-Assyrian Empire (911–605 BC).
Deioces, Diako, Diaco, Deyaco, Diyako or Deiokes (Greek Δηιόκης) was, according to Herodotus, the first king of the Medes although this is contested. In the late 8th century BC there was a Daiukku or Dayukku[1] who was a Mannaean provincial governor. Perhaps Herodotus used the name in error.[2]

The Mannaeans /məˈniːənz/ (country name usually Mannea; Akkadian: Mannai, possibly Biblical Minni, מנּי) were an ancient people who lived in the territory of present-day northwestern Iran south of lake Urmia, around the 10th to 7th centuries BC. At that time they were neighbors of the empires of Assyria and Urartu, as well as other small buffer states between the two, such as Musasir and Zikirta.
In the Bible (Jeremiah 51:27) the Mannaeans are called Minni. In the Jewish Encyclopedia (1906), Minni is identified with Armenia,[1][2] but it could refer to one of the provinces in ancient Armenia; Minni, Ararat and Ashkenaz.[3][4]According to examinations of the place and personal names found in Assyrian and Urartian texts, the Mannaeans, or at least their rulers, spoke Hurrian, a non-Semitic and non-Indo-European language related to Urartian, with no modern language connections.[5]
