The Death of Jesus
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “ Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?”
which means,
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
|
35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”
36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine,
put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink,
saying,
“Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.”
|
37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last.
|
38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
|
39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last,
he said,
“Truly this man was the Son of God!”

Jacob's Dream
10 Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran.
11 And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. 12 And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven.
|
And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it!
|
13 And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring.
|
14 Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
|
16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place,
and I did not know it.”
17 And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place!
This is none other than the house of God,
and
this is the gate of heaven.”
18 So early in the morning Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head
and
set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it.
|
19 He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first.
|
20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear,
21 so that I come again to my father's house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God,
22 and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God's house.
And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.”

Moses Given Powerful Signs
But Moses said to the Lord, “Oh, my Lord,
I am not eloquent,
either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant,
but
I am slow of speech and of tongue.”
|
11 Then the Lord said to him, “Who has made man's mouth? Who makes him mute,
or deaf, or seeing, or blind?
Is it not I, the Lord?
12 Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.”
13 But he said,
“Oh, my Lord, please send someone else.”
14 Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses and he said, “Is there not Aaron,
your brother, the Levite?
I know that he can speak well. Behold, he is coming out to meet you,
and when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.
15 You shall speak to him and put the words in his mouth, and I will be with your mouth
and with his mouth and will teach you both what to do.
16 He shall speak for you to the people, and he shall be your mouth,
and you shall be as God to him.
17 And take in your hand this staff, with which you shall do the signs.”

[ Why Have You Forsaken Me? ]
|
[ To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David. ]
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
|
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
|
O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.
|
3 Yet you are holy,
enthroned on the praises of Israel.
4 In you our fathers trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
5 To you they cried and were rescued;
in you they trusted and were not put to shame.
|
6 But I am a worm and not a man,
scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
7 All who see me mock me;
they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
8 “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him;
let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”
|
9 Yet you are he who took me from the womb;
you made me trust you at my mother's breasts.
10 On you was I cast from my birth,
and from my mother's womb you have been my God.
|
11 Be not far from me,
for trouble is near,
and
there is none to help.
|
12 Many bulls -encompass me;
strong bulls of Bashan surround me;
13 they open wide their mouths at me,
like a ravening and roaring lion.
|
14 I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint;
my heart is like wax;
it is melted within my breast;
15 my strength is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to my jaws;
you lay me in the dust of death.
16 For dogs encompass me;
a company of evildoers encircles me;
they have pierced my hands and feet--
|
17 I can count all my bones--
they stare and gloat over me;
18 they divide my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.
|
19 But you, O Lord, do not be far off!
O you my help, come quickly to my aid!
20 Deliver my soul from the sword,
my precious life from the power of the dog!
21 Save me from the mouth of the lion!
You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen!
|
22 I will tell of your name to my brothers;
in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!
All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him,
and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
24 For he has not despised or abhorred
the affliction of the afflicted,
and he has not hidden his face from him,
but has heard, when he cried to him.
|
25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
26 The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
May your hearts live forever!
|
27 All the ends of the earth shall remember
and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
shall worship before you.
28 For kingship belongs to the Lord,
and he rules over the nations.
|
29 All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
even the one who could not keep himself alive.
30 Posterity shall serve him;
it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
31 they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn,
that he has done it.

36 The heads of the fathers' houses of the clan of the people of Gilead the son of Machir, son of Manasseh, from the clans of the people of Joseph,
|
came near
and
spoke before Moses
and
before the chiefs, the heads of the fathers' houses of the people of Israel.
|
2 They said,
“The Lord commanded my lord to give the land for inheritance
by lot to the people of Israel,
and
my lord was commanded by the Lord
to give
the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters.
|
3 But if they are married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the people of Israel,
then their inheritance will be taken from the inheritance of our fathers
and
added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry.
So it will be taken away from the lot of our inheritance.
|
4 And when the jubilee of the people of Israel comes,
then their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry,
and
their inheritance will be taken from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.”
|
5 And Moses commanded the people of Israel according to the word of the Lord, saying,
“The tribe of the people of Joseph is right.
|
6 This is what the Lord commands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad: ‘Let them marry whom they think best, only they shall marry within the clan of the tribe of their father.
|
7 The inheritance of the people of Israel shall not be transferred from one tribe to another,
for every one of the people of Israel shall hold on to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
|
8 And every daughter who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the people of Israel shall be wife to one of the clan of the tribe of her father, so that every one of the people of Israel may possess the inheritance of his fathers.
|
9 So no inheritance shall be transferred from one tribe to another, for each of the tribes of the people of Israel shall hold on to its own inheritance.’”
|
10 The daughters of Zelophehad did as the Lord commanded Moses,
11 for Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to sons of their father's brothers.
|
12 They were married into the clans of the people of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of their father's clan.
|
13 These are the commandments and the rules that the Lord commanded through Moses to the people of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|

Whose Son Is the Christ? 41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, 44 “‘The Lord said to my Lord, | “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet”’? | 45 If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?” 46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions. _______________________________ Matthew 22:44

Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, | “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” | 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). | 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, | ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” | 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her. _______________________________ John 20:13

Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus ___________________________ Jesus Is Buried 42 And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. | 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. | 45 And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. | 46 And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. | 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid. ________________________________ Mark 15:43

Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus __________________________ Jesus Is Buried 38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, | but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. | So he came and took away his body. | 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. | 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. | 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. | 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. ________________________________ John 19:38
